Diving in Croatia is an adventure that has gained much popularity in the last 10 years even if diving clubs have existed in Croatia since the 50’s. There is a club or some instruction center practically in each Croatian island, as well as dozens of towns in the coasts.
The Croatian waters treasure sunken ships, coral reefs, caves, and an endless amount of cardumes. The waters are shallow around the Istrian coast, descending 50 m in average, but they turn more dangerous as their depth increases while heading to the southern region. The deepest point is found in the Jabuka Island at 70 km to the northwest of the Vis islands, where the depth reaches 1,300 m.
For being able to dive legally in Croatia, a Croatian permit for diving is required. It has a cost of 100 HRK which translates into about $17.5 USD, and can be obtained in any diving center or club by covering the requisite of presenting a passport and a diving certification card. This permit is valid for a year. Nevertheless, a special permit is required for diving in the Kornati Islands National Park and in the Mljet National Park, among other places. The cost for being able to access these waters is also of 100 HRK and all the procedures are done by the diving club that organizes the event.
The diving seasons begin in May and continue until November; even though, probably the best months for this are September and October because the waters still remain warm and the crowds have left from practically every place. The aggressive and cold waters of winter make for anything but a gratifying diving experience. The temperatures of the summer season vary from 22oC to 25oC in the surface, but they can descend to 19oC at a depth of 12 m.
Even if there are little waves and tides are calm in Croatian waters, the height of the waves varies from 50 cm to 1.5 m, and the tallest of them can reach 5 m. It’s important to have in mind that currents tend to be weak in most of the places but it’s important to be careful when canal and passages between an island and another are crossed.
When making a journey in gullet without doubt one of the main options for having fun is diving, so it’s important to have in mind all of the factors needed to be able to undergo this activity without risks.
