The gulf and the coast of Kvarner have been summer recreational places since the times of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. With the high mountains protecting the coast from the winds of the north that can be strong, the gulf of Kvarner has a relatively mild climate even in spring and fall.
In the north of Kvarner, the island of Cres is separated from the Losinj islands just by a narrow canal, but both islands are very different. Cres has a much wilder nature and the landscape is more arid, its orography is marked by steep hills in the region of the east coast. This island counts with 68 km of length.
As part of the same gulf, the island of Krk represents the largest of Croatia, with an area of 409 km2. The southern region of this island hosts a lot of vegetation and the majestic beach of Baska, one of the few beaches fully covered with sand in Croatia. The northwest part of this island is home to the ferocious bora winds, which have left this region with a desert-like aspect due to their intensity. The part of the island with the most tourism is the town of Vrbnik that is found uphill and is known as the center of the excellent Zlatina wine.
Lovran is a place full of little streets that draw a very picturesque view and is found at only 5 km to the south of Opatija. Lovran is an exuberant town and the place of settlement of resting complexes in the East Coast of the Istrian peninsula. It possesses a fresh climate that is protected by the Ucka Mountains and has a very important architectural richness.
Opatija is a very calm complex just in the corner of the Istrian peninsula. Its mild climate and its beautiful landscape made this a preferred destination for the vacations of Austrians during the XIX century. The orography of this place is pretty rough and its coasts are rocky, but it’s possible to stroll through them calmly along 12 km until reaching the picturesque town of Lovran. On the road there are dozens of hidden coves to be found that invite the visitors to enjoy their waters.
Opatija is one of those places that have something for each person. Along the sea there are parks for children that can provide a lot of fun, couples can romantically promenade in the Lungomare, and single people can enjoy of the night life.
It’s evident that Kvarner has many places that offer a formidable stay in the coast or inside the cities, and any one of them is well worth making a stop in the gulet.
